Les nouvelles de la maternelle 3A - Kindergarten News – January 2019
Welcome back! I hope you all had an enjoyable and restful break. Thank you so much for all the lovely notes and thoughtful gifts – I hope you also enjoyed lots of treats over the holidays!
IMPORTANT DATES
· Monday, January 7 – School Resumes & Gymnastics begin
· January 11 & January 18 – Petland visit to the classroom (learn about pets and pet care)
· January 28 & January 30 – Elder Randy Brown working with students in the school
· January 23 – Ice Skating
· January 31 – Report Cards go home
A FEW REMINDERS
GYMNASTICS
We begin the gymnastics unit in physical education. It is imperative that students wear appropriate clothing for this activity. This includes pants that allow good range of motion and movement. Track pants or footless tights are recommended and girls are asked to avoid wearing dresses/skirts during this time. Students will be asked to remove hoodies and sweaters, so a t-shirt underneath is advised. Long hair is to be tied back with an elastic and wearing jewelry/hairbands etc. is discouraged.
EN PLEIN AIR - THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
Students have enjoyed outdoor learning when dressed appropriately. Please ensure that your child is coming to school dressed for winter and all types of weather conditions. This includes: Snow pants, coat, boots, hat, scarf and waterproof mittens. If your child takes the bus or arrives via car, please remember that coming to school with these items allows everyone to participate in the outdoor experience in comfort and safety. While I do have some set dates, if everyone is dressed for the weather, we can take advantage of any day – please send your child prepared!
LES DEVOIRS (HOMEWORK)
We continue with “les devoirs” in the next term. Students will continue to receive a small homework assignment “les devoirs” to complete and share. This will be an opportunity for them to speak orally and use learned vocabulary in French (due this month on January 16).
LOOSE PARTS AND FOUND OBJECTS
As you may know, I collect all sorts of loose parts and use them in the classroom. Loose parts play is an important part of the learning continuum. Found objects provide opportunities for more kinds of play than occurs with standard play equipment. Children can experiment with their physical and creative abilities by manipulating found loose objects. This helps promote development of judgment (risk-taking), creativity, problem solving, curiosity and an appetite for learning.
Over the holidays, please save the following for us if you have no need for them. Thank you for your support!
-plastic milk jug caps (clean)
-food pouch caps (clean)
-corks
-metal hardware such as washers, nuts and bolts

REMINDER: Winter clothing
We encourage your child to be prepared for all types of weather now that winter has arrived, so please ensure that your child is coming to school dressed for winter. This includes: Snow pants, coat, boots, hat, scarf and mittens. This will allow us the flexibility to sometimes go outside for our learning! It is also helpful if students can do zippers and snaps themselves. Thanks for your help in learning these skills at home.
THINGS TO PRACTICE AT HOME
Ask your child about new words they have learned in class. Play letter/sound games with them to build phonemic awareness. This can happen in both English and French, as strong literacy skills in the first language will help foster success in the second language. Have some fun, clapping, snapping and tapping the syllables in the word. Play “I spy a word” or go on a letter/word hunt around your home or neighbourhood.
Fine Motor Tip: All letters start at the top and either dive down or use a “rainbow up”
EXPRESSIONS

Je suis une fille/un garçon
Je peux (statements)
Je vois (statements)
J’aime (statements)
De l’aide, s’il-vous-plait!
Joyeux Noel! Bonnes vacances!
One thing to keep in mind moving forward is to practice saying the full phrase/answer in French (It’s much easier to give a 1-word answer but it won’t help your child learn the structure of sentences in French).

LES COPAINS
This month we begin meeting regularly with our grade 3 learning buddies in Mme Ireland’s class (pm students) and Mme. Pelleau’s class (am students). Special activities will be planned throughout the year to encourage citizenship, responsibility and French language learning.
LIBRARY
Beginning in October, students will visit the Learning Commons to borrow one French book from the school library (Day 3 for PM class, Day 5 for AM class).
VOLUNTEERS
Please ensure that if you are scheduled to volunteer in the classroom or on field trips that you hold a current, valid security clearance. Check with the office please! And please remember to make alternate arrangements for siblings when volunteering.
ATTENDANCE/CHANGE IN PLANS
If your child is going to be absent, please call the attendance line at the school and leave a message. Please leave your child’s full name, teacher name grade (KG am or pm), and the date. If you know about an absence in advance, you may also wish to write a note in your child’s envelope and a note for the office as well. Any changes in the going home plan must be received in writing and/or a telephone call made directly to the office.
FOOTWEAR AND CLOTHING
As we move into colder weather please practice and encourage independent dressing at home. Snow pants, coat, hat, shoes/boots, backpack and mittens, is a great order to follow. It is also helpful if students can do zippers and snaps independently. Thanks for your diligence and help with these routines.
SNACK
In kindergarten students enjoy a smallsnack break each day. Please ensure that you are packing a small, nutritious snack. I am sometimes seeing an overwhelming amount of food in the snack kits and while snack is an important part of our daily routine, we want to ensure that snack time is not eating away at precious center / learning time. Please try to include a maximum of 2 items, along with a water bottle or juice.
COLOUR DAYS
We continue with colour days in October. Please have some fun by having students wear the colour of the day and bring in a matching snack. See the calendar for dates.
