Today, Mr. Wagner joined the AM class to talk about his job as a forest hydrologist. Students spent almost an hour learning about the forest and why it's important to take care of it. AM families, ask your child, "how can you tell how old a tree is?" and "why is it important to take care of the forest?".
Both classes had another We Thinkers lesson, as well as worked on lacrosse skills in P.E. The PM class also did a bit of journaling and helped take down our space station in preparation for a new dramatic play set-up (we're all so excited to see what's next!). What a great way to start the week! Both classes started the day with a Sharing Circle and also got to enjoy music with Mme Zdrill. They then each had a special job presentation. The AM class enjoyed listening to a story called The Sharing Circle with Bobby's mom who talked to us about working in Indigenous and Community Relations. The AM class then went to the gym for a special introduction to Lacross with one of the players from the Calgary Roughnecks (also a Kindergarten dad). The PM class enjoyed hearing about making films and working together on a storyboard with William's dad. The PM class also spent some time finding shapes in books using only French words: "Je vois un triangle", "je vois un cube", etc.
Today the PM class had a very busy and exciting day. We started off with the presentation from Dufflebag Theatre. This bilingual play had the kids doubled over with laughter! Ask your child what their favourite part was. We then moved straight into our special art project with Crock-a-doodle (it's a surprise!). We enjoyed snack and then spent some time outdoors where we discussed playground expectations. Back inside, we journaled about the theatre presentation and had center time. Enjoy your weekend everyone!
Well, the PM class finally made it to Safety City today! Thank you to our parent volunteers who joined us, it was greatly appreciated.
In the AM, we went to the library, played shape and colour Bingo, and learned our to draw 3D shapes ("it's like magic, Mme!"). Today we continued to look at shapes, this time by heading outside to search for them. It's amazing where you can find shapes, once you look! Ask your child, "why do shapes matter?" . Students also had their last day of basketball in P.E., and another We Thinkers lesson.
Bonjour! I hope everyone got to spend some time outside this weekend and celebrate the Earth. I'm so pleased by all the messages from families about how their child wants to pick up garbage - thank you for sharing! Today, students enjoyed music with Mme Zdrill, our presentation from Firefighter Todd, and some journal work (in addition to our daily stories, songs and center time). Our AM class also started the morning with a sharing circle, and the PM class went to the library.
A couple of important reminders from our discussion with the firefighter: -Please practice with your child their address and phone number -Please practice a fire drill at your home (with a meeting spot) Ask your child : "How far away should you be from something hot?", "Should you sleep with your door open or closed (and why)?", and "what should you do if you find a needle on the ground?" (this last question has been practiced with a couple of our other presentations too!). I've also added a new tab under "more" to our site... it's called Classroom Wishlist. As you do any spring cleaning, if you come across something from our list, I would be happy to use it in the classroom. Merci beaucoup! Today was another busy day! Both classes worked on their basketball skills in P.E., we read a book about spring and made ourselves a flower garden, we had another We Thinkers lesson about following the group plan, and both classes got to enjoy a career presentation. The AM class enjoyed learning about what a scientist does (to be more specific, an Earth Science Technologist from the Department of Geology at the U of C!). Mr. Derek shared lots of great information, but my favorite was when he told the students that they didn't have to wait to be an adult to be a scientist, they can "just go out and observe nature and be a scientist"! He also shared about all his expensive "toys", so there might be a few more budding scientists tonight! The students are also getting better and asking questions (not just telling stories). One really good question this morning was, "how do you measure a river?". Bravo! The PM class enjoyed learning about what a lawyer does. Mr. Jeff came in "looking fancy" (as one student shared) and helped us role play a mock trial between Cinderella and Elsa. Students played the judge, lawyers, witnesses and clerk. Some good questions from this afternoon were, "why did you want to be a lawyer?", "what do you do on your breaks?", and "why does it take so long (to be a lawyer)". The PM class also got to take home a coloring book and crayons from Mr. Jeff and the AM class was treated to a special presentation and treat from one of their classmates, who (with a bit of help from his dad), made everyone eggs with a 3D printer, wow! Thank you to everyone who helped make this day so fun and full of learning. Have a wonderful weekend! Today was a big challenge day in journals! We wrote and drew about our day at the park. The difference was that today, the students had to finish one sentence by themselves! We talked about how we could try to figure out a word using the sounds we heard, as well as how this could be really hard (and what do we do when we don't know how to do something). The students were very courageous in giving this gr.1 work a try and I was so proud of them (and they were very proud of themselves too!). Both classes also enjoyed music with Mme Zdrill, the AM class went to the library, and the PM class learned about what a child psychologist does (ask your child!) and practiced some techniques for calming down (Calm-Down Yoga, Belly Breathing, and Mindfulness/5, 4, 3, 2,1). Thanks again to Dr. Erin for joining us this afternoon!
What a perfect day for our walk to Research Park! First, a big thank you to all our adult volunteers - you made the day run so smooth!
Once at the park, we listened to the book Step Gently Out which helped remind us of how beautiful our planet is. We then went on a massive garbage hunt. Amazingly (and also disappointing to realize), even after the AM group had been through, the PM group was still able to collect many bags of garbage. We then came back together to listen to the book, The Curious Garden, which also reminded us of how important our green spaces are. We then went on a Spring scavenger hunt and finished with some free play. Both classes were shocked when they realized that was our day over already. Thank you to everyone for sending in the April homework. The students presented what they want to do when they grow up and gave great feedback to each other ("speak a little louder", "you did a great job", "you spoke well", "you needed a little bit of help", etc.). They also loved making connections between each other and their future jobs ("we can work together when we grow up!"). We then journaled and added details to our drawings. Students continued to work on basketball skills in the gym and we also started working on a new song about Spring (Le printemps). Reminder that tomorrow we are going on our walk to Research Park, so please dress your child for outside weather. Splash pants and rainboots might be a good idea. I would also greatly appreciate it if every student could bring a plastic grocery bag as two of our activities are a scavenger hunt and a garbage clean up. Merci beaucoup!
